[-] we gathered to geather what w could of our belonginges that the Mob had lefte us & Started [-]ockey Mountaines with the Church, & made our way acroos the [-]oway Teretory from the Mississippea River to t[-] [-]ve[-] here my pen failes to write the dicription of Suffering of the Saintes the Snow Rain & mud & scanty provion tumeg all seemed to make it harder if posable but with all we were A chereful crowd & a motly one to it was toil a[-] through mud and water & the boyes knight hird, the olde folkes andirles Girles trying to make thinges Cheareful & pleasent f[-] [-] and boyes Sundayes wee layed over as often as we could finde A campeing grounde & helde meetinges. I donte remember of ha[-] [-]armer or complainte because of our poverty or harde Shipes, we were all working with A will to get westewarde whier [-] ----- new page (MSSSC2314_p018.jpg) live our religion in peace later on we came to the Missouria River & had crossed over the river then or about that time came the call for the Mormon Battalion to go to Callifornia and fight the Mexicanes the call was obeyed my broather Edward Enlisted Father tolde Moather that it would not do for him to go alone with his poore helth So it was decided Father was to go to, it seemes from what they hav tolde me Father stood the journy better then my Broather Edward did Father cared for him when he was sick & did not give him the poisiones druges the Dr was compelling the soldieres to take my Father being a Dr and understandeing all medicen when the Poison mediceneane he done what he was a minde to withit and the boyes got well or many of them did Ageate many of them fell by the way side Some of them that were sick had to be lefte at Puebelow and diferant pointes of the Journey and the Able men wente on to Callifornia my Father and Br. Edward being with that party, they wente through to the ende of the journey and were honorably discharged one yeare from the day they enlisted, which was the, 16th of July 1840 and were di charged the, 16,th of July 1847, they worked and accumalated meanes to come home with as they thought but on thier way here to Salt Lake they met the express from here sente by Pres. Brigham Young to Say to the Men they had not best come onto the Valley unless they had provisiones anuf to last them till they [-]ould raise something to eat for if they did they would starve to Death So broather Edward let Father hav all he [-]spaire of his outfit gest kept anuf to last him back to the Settlementes provisiones horses and mules and [-]ather started for the Valley Some of the company had thiere provisiones packed on wilde Mules and when [-]neare where there were wilde horses they Stampeeded and wente of with thiere provisions my Father with the [-]of the company had to devide his provisiones with the men to keepe them from starvation so when he cam[-] [-]to the Valley thiere was no provissiones to be bought he would sell a hors for a quarter of Beefe when he could [-] times he would go up in the Mountaines and cut Small treees and make broomes of them and in the Spring [-] Some become corne seeds planted it and it grew Nice by then he started to make broomes and got along some bet[-] [-]nen would let him hav alittle some thing to eat for a broome and he got along some better but it was h[-] [-] everey boddy to live theire wanothing to by or sell all were alike ----- new page (MSSSC2314_p019.jpg) while my Father and Broather Edward were having thiere troubles in Calliforna and in the Vally of Salt Lake my Moather and my Self were having houre troubles, when Father went away he lefte us and all the Property he had in the care of Mr Janorin Dame on the the North side of the Missouria River thiere were 3 thre companeyes being made up to come on a head to the Rockey Mountains Bishop Millor and Broather Emet were the Laderes br Emet had ben on this side of the River ever Since Br, Josep Smith was killed for he was prepairing the way for Br, Joseph to come West: when he was killed he was like a loste Sheepe he did not know where to go so he stayed with the Indeanes and lived as beste he could with his family till the moove from Nauvoo. then he fell in with Bishop Millors company and traveled with them and stayed with them till Spring, then the whole or all the Companeyes broke up & wente for thiere Selfes in the Spring of 47,7,<47> Brigham Young & Heber C Kimble Each ad a Company, they were Called Brighams Company & Heebers Company I was in Brighams Company & Br. Binghams, 10 ten the Miller Company were quite a wayes out & were Stoping at the Lope Forkes when oure Companeyes Came up, thiere arose a dispute when the Companeyes met about which party Should take the leade & thiere were men sente back to Council Bluffs t see what President Young said was best to do when they got thiere whiere the Leaderes were Pres. Joseph Smith & his Father & the lading Elderes left N.Y. for the last time to go to Kirkland, Ohio they helde a two day meeting in the Town of Freedom about thre Miles from whair my Father lived one of my Fatheres & Moatheres olde Friendes from Freedom name Ira Hatch knowing of Moatheres Sickness came to oure house they were Latter da Saintes & having jeste ben with the Prophet Seemed to be filled with the Holy Goste when he and his Wife came in the house it seemed to me a childe as I was Some thing Hevenly was thier Such a healeing influance came with them my Moather was bolstered up in a trundle bed made for that purpos with testeres & curtains arounde it & drawn closte to the fire so as to not let any colde air on her nite or day the fire, in the large fire place never was let go out & everey thing was being done to keepe her alive She had not ben able to Speake a loud worde since the Colde Weather set in this is the way she was when they came to us, they brought the one of the first paperes that had ben printed I think it was the times and Seasons they allso brought the Book of Mormon for her to reade & tolde her how it had come about & that an Angel had come to this earth & revealed & confird the everlasting gospel on Josep Smith and that all the gifts that the Aincent, Apostles had confered on them were agane be stoed on the Earthe and the Church was fully organised in this last dispensation & if she had faith to receive the Gospel She could claim the promis & be healed, they had prayers with us & lefte us withe a promis to come agane to us Sone, in a weeke or to they came a gane & rought the Book of Doctrin Coveenentes & lefte that from the time they be gan to pray for her & she began to read she began to improve Br. Hatches family & Grand Moather Wade & Grand Moather Bundy & the two Elderes Br White & Elder Hicks Moather had gotten so she could be lifted in to a large arm chaire & be proped up with pillowes, when the meeting was over the Sled as it was called was brought to the dore with Oxen hitched to it & abed put into it & she was caried in armes & laide on the bed they had to go acrosst the farme to a streeme of water to baptise hir it was up over a long hill I remember She was brought back Close changed & the folkes all wente home but the Elderes supper was over & a grate deele of Preaching & explaining the Gospel finally prayer time came for my parentes were strictly religous Father A Baptist Moather A Methodist prayers were over the Elderes set two Chairs one for Father & said Br. Wade we are going to set youre house in order Br. Wade you sit here Sister Wad you set in this on Father was placed to the hed of his family then Mother was Confirmed a member of the Church when that was done they lade handes on Moather for hir helthe & tolde hir she should be healed & she truly was healed the nex morning while my sister Sarah Maria & myself were ling in bed [-] looked up & saw our Moather helping our Grand Mother Bundy fixing breakfast wee were supprised for wee had never or I never seene hir arounde the house before to work & I was nerely 7 seven yeares olde we thought it was because thiere was company, breckfast over & a Chapter red in th Bible whiere it sayes Oh! foolish Galations whoo hath bewitched you that you could not obey the truith it seemed to prick Father to the Hearte, A hymn was Sung & prayeres were over Mother took Father by the arm & said Moses come, go with me he sayd I am not worthy Elder White said yes Br. Wad you are go and be baptised Sister Wade come go along it wonte hirte you a bit ----- new page (MSSSC2314_p023.jpg) 7 Soit ended my Moather walked the distance she had ben caried on the bed the day before to Father baptised & sang all the way thiere & back & was comparitive by a well woman till the Move from Nauvoo then the hearde ships She had to endure were more then she was able to Stande the foode was limited & poore mostely Sea biscuits & a little corne meele for bred some times a little frisk game wee had to divide oure provisions with the Indians to keepe peace witheme & to keepe them from killing oure Cattle so that made it harder for us to get through the winter the Disease Called Scurvy or Black leg was in the Camp that was what ailded Moather & I had it to I thought I had frosen my feete going arounde the house doing the work & takeing care of the Sick my feete were soverey bad & my Ankels were so sore the Cordes of my Ankles were soverey bad I could hardely step the flesh seemed to Suf off & leave the Cordes bare know one can im magin my suffering, it proved to be the Scurvy or Black leg that ailded me my moather was soverey sick & I had to exerte everey musel I had to ceepe up alittle to take care of hir I was young & my time had not come when the winter broke I got better, the first of April Br Dame & the reste of the Men that wente down to Missouria to get provesions returned for thiere famileyes then all was in a hurry to get reddy for to sarte back to Winter Quarteres & thiere was several verey sick Mr Moather & Vinson Shirtleffs were the worst ones I got the waggon fixed & fixed hir on the bed as best I could & foure men caried hir on the bed & put hir in the waggon & crossed over the River the water was soverey high that the men had to put large bloocks of wood under the bolsteres of the waggons [-] under the waggon box to keepe the water from runing in the boxes of the waggons. Sister Shirtlif was so verey Sick they stayed 2 two days wating for hir to Dy before they Started but concluded they would moove hir it woulde make a change perhaps for the better, it did for she got well & was alive the laste I kew of hir, Moather seemed to Rally a little when we got down to Wintere Qarteres She was able to walk arounde a little for about two weekes then she took hir bed & kept it till she Died in the Fall of 408 Dame lefte Moather & my self in Winter Qarters, [-], Six weekes while he wente to Misouria & back ----- new page (MSSSC2314_p024.jpg) at the ende of Six weekes he came back to winter quarteres & mooved us overe the Missouria River to Keanes Vill whaire we lived till Moatheres Death her sufferings were extreeme grater then my fraile pen can right them Moather realised that her dayes were numberde & about 2 monthes before she Died, there was a Font prepaird for her at hir requeste to be re Baptised in and She was Baptised She was verey desireous to hav everey thing done that she could do, to helpe her to get into the Celestial Kingdom Said she had helped to Lay the foundation of the Kingdom, & was desireous that her Children should join to geather & help to Builde up the Kingdom of of God the knight that she Died Sister Daly Sister Bowen & Sister Williams said they would stay with me So I could li down & hav a little reste for I had not ben to bed for about 3 Months what reste I had I had gotten was siting in a chaire by her bed with her bed for a pillow I had all wayes to be neare her I had not ben layn down verey long before I was called up & tolde Moather wanted to talk to me I got up & wente to her She talked to me & tolde me of the situation of the family how wee were scattered, & of my Sisteres going back East & of Father & Edward being in Callifornia & perhaps they might not live to get back to the Church she said she could not Die in peace without knowing She had one childe that would do as She wanted them to do She then Said will you Covenent with me before these three Witnesses to do what I ask you to do She had taken me by the hand I tolde her apromis made to the liveing should be Sacred to the Ded & I would try and do the best I could She then wente on and tolde me the Situation of the family and how wee were all Scattered and Shee did not know as any one of them would ever get back to the Church or not. She then tolde me She wanted me to come with the Church the first opertunitty I had & stay with the Church as long as I lived and carey out the work she had commenced I tolde her I would try and do the beste I could She then Said she could Dy in peace She onely Spoke onc to me alfter that I was standing over hir weepeing Sonely Said, Deare Childe donte weepe for me I will be better of weepe for youre Self you are the one that will see trouble, it seemed to me now that She must of had a presente ment of my future life for my life Since then has ben a checkerd one all the way through as one got reddy the two Girls came along Elisebath, and Catherine when they got thiere it was nerely Sundowne but it was no choise forme they helped me fix hir to be put away that knight thiere was about 5 five Girles to go with me about my owne age and by the time the hill was reached the sone was gone down I alone Mourner not one Deare friende to say one comforting, the worde the 5 five Girls the to young men that dug the Grave, Albert Boen and Finies Daly the Bishop Knight and Wm A Hickman Emery Meechum a lad and by the time it was all over it was real darke that was the gratest change of my life it changed me from a frivolus girl to a woman it made me realise that I had no friendes it seemed as though what fewthings was lefte some one was reddy to take them from me I was young and Ritcher men would not helpe, Henry Millar his teeme Stood by the Store dore doing nothing & he could not Spare the time to go a half a mile with Moather to the Grave that herte me I felte bade before and rite a little more the feede was good traveling up the North Side of the Plat River & we got along all right the first parte of the journey but when we crossed over the Plat River wee came to whair the Emegration roades joined then the things begane to change the Colary had done its work thiere were thousands of Dollars worth of property Scattered by the way Sid Some because of the Collary & Some because the Cattle wer given out and the waggones had to be unloded so as to liten the loades so the cattle could travel waggones were left Bacon piled up by the corde as nice as I ever saw Stoves trunkes & everey thing one could think of all most the waggons were all or moste of them dameged or the moste of them were the stoves were damaged all so yet thiere were many thinges that were verey useful to the poore Destitute Mormon Emegration that followed we had traveled along and tire som roads makeing the moste of the roade as we traveled along the Buffalows were very plenty ful up the plat River but as we neared the foot hills of the Mountains the Cattle got foot Sore & tired & many gave out thiere was one verey peculiar Campeing place comeing along Some whair neare Independence Rock on the Sweete water River it Seemes as though the Cattle and Horses would Smell some thing they would give a nif & a snorte & starte & aregular Stam peede followed the hole hird would Starte Waggones to when they were hitched to them I happened to be in one of the waggons when it was stampeeded & two of the Girles Elisebath & Catherine Hickman & Emery Meechum the lad that was driving the Oxen they turned to the right of the road towardes the hills or mountains & run about 3 quarteres of a mile or more the wheele oxen fell the tung of the waggon plungeing in the ground I was holdeing to the bowes of the waggon on one side & Kate on the oather side the stop of the Waggon was so quick that the Bowes broke & threw us boath out one on one side & the oather on the oather I was insenceble for a few minetes but things were fixed up & the journey resumed Presedente Young Said that was one of the Gadeanton Roberes Srongholdes & thiere had ben grate Battles fought thiere & thiere was wicked Spiretes thiere to garde teh places for all or nearly all Emegrantes as well as the mormones were stampeeded there, pack animeles & all the first parte of the time but later on I did the Mountain it was noon wee had to Stop & let the cattle rest & refresh our seves for we had a long Journey for the alfter noone wee could not stop where we wer over knight for want of feede and water it was 5 miles to the top of the Mountain & when we got to the top it was allmoste strait down onely treees cut down & the Stampes & loges to holde the Wagones from falling on the Oxen wee all had to walk to the top but it was nerely Darke when wee found ourselves to the bottom of the mounta I was Sick with mountain Feever but I walked all the Same the next day we came down through Emegrati Kenyon in to Salt Lake Vally thiere My Br. Laton before, 12 oclock a sone came to them to bless thier home he had one litle Girl by his first Wife who Died before he wente in the Mormon Battalion & the girl was with hir Grandma in Farmington much the Same as many oather Women the Sick had to be cared for and and it Seemed to be my lot to care for the Sick at home & abroad fare and neare & my Husband Seemed proud to hav me go & do good I all wayes was handy with my kneedle & I founde plenty of kneedle worke to do for the family as well as for the Neighbores & it helped us to get along in them harde times I allso lerened to Carde the Wool & Spin the yarn & collar it to mak the cloath for the childrenes close & the stocking they wore as we did not hav Sheepe I would Spin on Shieres to get the Roles & then Spin & get the cloath mad for the winter but it did not Seeme so verey bad to work I was thankful to be able to work & helpe oatheres I hav tryed to helpe on theres as well as myself I hav had verey litle done for me since I was a litle Childe I donte know what it is to be wated on or cared for as oather Women do I hav all wayes done for oather people gotten along as best I could myself when I hav ben sick I hav mostly bridges were built when the water was low we could forde the River with the teeme but in high water A Waggon box had to be titened up Some way to make About to cross the River for buisness had to go on the first 204th the yeare 50 wee all wente to Salt Lake to cellebrate the Aniversity of oure comeing to the Vally wee had one cow for all the family which numbered 9 with my baby when we came home the next day the Woolves had torn hir bag so verey bad that she was never able to give anymore milk in fact she never got well my Br Edward let us hav a cow to milk that Summer till we were able to get anouther we were not Successful in getting the water out of the Jordon River to water the land the water bankes were to high to get the water on the Land to Eregate with later on thiere was a big ditch taken out a way up the River several miles & thiere was Grate hopes to the Settleres the water had to be taken arounde a large Clay banck & it would brake away & then when thiere was a heavey Rain it would wash the Clay away so it in time had to be abandond & in the Sumer of 50[-] My Husband wente to Callifornia to See what luck he would hav thiere when he had ben gone A month or six weekes my oldest Girl was born Sarah Maria when she was about 3 three monthes olde I wente to Salt Lake Citty to my broather Edwardes to do the work & take Care of Sister Belinda Wade for she was to be confined in March — which she was Monroe Wade was born athat time while I lived thiere I lefte Willy My Deare little boy at home with Mrs Brenette Hickman She was more then a moather to my Chilldren She knew how to take care of them I did not then I lerened later on how to do for them July the 3d 18502 my Husban returned home from Calliforna he brought home some Horses & alile money & some Nice Golde Specimines that he dug his Self out of the Ground I wente from my broatheres home agane when he came back home the following winter was a verey Colde & bad winter for everey one boath man & beastes no one had any thing more then he kneeded for his own family but the Lorde helped us to sustain our Selves wood was Scerce Greene Willows made our fires & warmed us our cooking was verey Poligomist ties joining us to geather & each one going for our Selves & doing the best wee could for our Children I had given me what My Husband could Spair me & the Children he fixed us up as best he could to come up North here to my Br Edwardes to live here in North Ogden he gave us a yoke of Oxen & Waggon one cow he paid $100 Dollars for the Oxen & $50 for the cow a span of mares & to coltes the bigest colte I was to let Edward hav & a hundred lbs of flower I had all my traps and a loom I thought I could make a living by weeving I sone found it was to harde work it was waring me out & I had to let it go & try something eles to make a living I wove about five hundred yardes of cloath before I quit I hav done everey kinde of work that can be mensioned in the line of work to raise & Supporte my children here in North Ogden till thiere dayes of thiere kneede is over & they are all grone to man hood & woman hood, & I know still feele that I hav more work to do I see something Everey day that I can do to do good
